Ecclesiastical enclosure in Ballybeg West

In tillage. Power (1932, 30; 118-9) locates early church site, 'Cill Cluaisi', chief church of the Tuath O Fiannadhuigh 'in a field called Cluain, on the summit of a ridge overlooking the main road...at the bottom of a glen on Denis Coghlan's farm...outline of circular surrounding fence, enclosing an acre or so, is traceable'. Two adjoining fields known as the 'cluain' and the 'far cluain' located. High dome shaped area occurs roughly at centre of 'Cluain' field; steep sided except to ENE where land drops only slightly from summit then rises gently. Crown of summit very stony though no trace of enclosure evident. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
