Earthwork in Rahard

In wet pasture 60m W of a road that marks the townland boundary with Newtown. Depicted on the OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped platform 10m N of farm track running E-W and 80m NW of a spring. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a raised oval-shaped area (dims. 16m NW-SE; 12m NE-SW) defined by a scarp (Wth 2m; H 0.3m) with external fosse (top Wth 5.9m; base Wth 1.9m; D 0.15m) visible from SE-WSW. E side of monument is irregular in shape and may have been altered in antiquity. Described in 1960 as a; ’low platform 60 feet (18m) in diameter and 3 feet [0.9m] high with faint traces of a bank at its edge. Portion of the eastern half shows signs of disturbance’ (O’Dwyer 1960, 98; Rahard 76). Outline of levelled monument visible as a cropmark defined by a circular growth of rushes on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 28/06/2018 where a drainage ditch to E divides wet pasture from drier land.
