What is recorded here

On a slight rise on top of a broad flat ridge between valleys running N-S, in tillage. There are excellent views in all directions. Forms S rise of slight saddle-back with 14-39 on N rise. Very stoney fields. According to the OS Letters (1839), 'two ancient Raths in the Deer Park are the only antiquities that have been discovered in this parish' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 39 (13)). Only one enclosure (KK014-039----) is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map. However, another monument, described as an 'earthen mound with no stone' and known locally as the 'little rath' was identified during ASI fieldwork in 1987 and is probably the 'rath' referred to in the OS Letters. This was located within a small tree plantation (dims. c. 70m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) within the deer park of Dunmore Park demesne. Both it and the plantation had been levelled by 1987.
