What is recorded here

Craan held a circular earthwork thirty-five metres across, large enough to exclude every casual visitor and every unnecessary argument. People called it a ringfort, perhaps because a circle demands more strength than a ditch and returns more life than a wall. Then a machine arrived in 1983, took the ridge apart, and left only the memory of a shape that had stood since before maps learned the name Craan.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
