Earthwork in Churchfield (costello By.)

Earthwork

What is recorded here

Costello By. is a low rounded hillock in County Mayo pasture, domed in profile and overlooking a flat expanse of bog. It may be an earthwork, but the crown remains hidden beneath dense gorse and brambles, denying easy judgement. The land has kept its own counsel, shaping a boundary or shelter that human hands may have placed there before memory faded.
In pasture, overlooking to S a flat expanse of bog and reclaimed pasture. Listed in the RMP (1997) as a possible earthwork on the basis of a roughly circular feature visible in an aerial photograph (GSI M 97 -8; Roll 213, pr. 31; SMR file). At this location is a low rounded hillock, domed in profile. Inspected in 1998, the crown of the hill could not be examined due to a dense covering of gorse and brambles. The nature of this feature is uncertain. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2022
