A castle stood here in the seventeenth century to control the ford across the River Finn. Coillte records the later Hayes estate planting of silver fir, European larch and lime, followed by the Land Commission's purchase of the estate and the transfer of the woodland to Coillte.
The wood on the edge of Stranorlar along the Finn. A quiet riverside walk now, but the place carries a hard memory: in March 1923, during the Civil War, four Anti-Treaty men, the Drumboe Martyrs, were executed here. A monument in the wood marks it.
