Raheenacluig Church (in Ruins)Church · 370 yd

Explorer Tom Raheenacluig Church is named after a 'cluey' person who probably just got lost on purpose to find it. The walls are sturdy and intact, like they’re waiting for someone to explain the name properly. Stick around for the light changing, it's a show.

Grosvenor MewsHouse · 574 yd

Explorer Tom Grosvenor Mews in Newcourt was visited by a poet who fell in a nearby ditch and wrote about it for weeks. It’s one of a pair of understated but well-proportioned mid-19th-century houses that add great quality to the area. The slightly concealed location adds to the surprise when you stumble upon them.

Manweiler's WoodWood · 635 yd

Explorer Tom Manweiler's Wood would win the county fair by growing its own prize-winning turnips out of pure spite. It doesn't even try hard, which makes it even more irritating to everyone else. Stand there long enough and someone will ask if you're lost.

Naylor's CoveBeach / strand · 693 yd

Explorer Tom Naylor's Cove remembers a poet who tripped over his own feet in the ditch right next door while writing about love. He ended up with mud on his face and a new rhyme about clumsiness, which is quite the legacy. Go back in winter, it's a different animal.

Bray HeadMountain / peak · 696 yd

Explorer Tom Bray Head has a cross on top and a railway clinging to the coast below. I would complain about the climb, but local people make it as a Good Friday procession, so I can manage a quieter pace. The headland reaches about 241 metres; its concrete cross went up in 1950. Some of the hill itself went away to help build Dún Laoghaire's pier, which is a fairly grand way to donate stone. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's railway took the cliff-side route below, then had to be diverted three times when the coast objected. I would have asked the rock for permission first, though it likely would have ignored me. A path from near Bray Esplanade climbs to the cross over rougher ground after the first steps. Check local trail conditions and stay back from drops. The view over town and sea is fine payment for a little honest effort.

Kilruddery House and GardensHeritage attraction · 1035 yd

Explorer Tom Kilruddery House and Gardens suspects the postman is stealing its roses and replacing them with inferior plastic ones. It’s got a whole conspiracy theory going about why the hedges look so perfectly suspicious today. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals and much less likely to judge your shoes.

Bray Head LoopWalking route · 1187 yd

Explorer Tom Bray Head Loop in County Wicklow is absolutely sick of being asked if the view is worth the effort, because yes, obviously, but you have to earn it first. It’s tired of the easy questions from lazy walkers. Tell your mates you found it first.

Bray BeachBeach / strand · 1359 yd

Explorer Tom Bray Beach is sitting on shingle, dreaming about winning the lottery so it can afford a proper sand treatment and a new coat of seaweed paint. It’s got big plans and even bigger delusions of grandeur. Bring a pen pal, they'll be jealous.

Font in BrayFont · 1573 yd

Explorer Tom Font in Bray is a sandstone cube with holes in the corners that look like it’s winking at you. There's a curse that only affects people who don't wave, turning their hair into permanent frizz until they apologize. Make up your own legend and I'll swear it's true.

Oldcourt CastleCastle · 1613 yd

Explorer Tom Oldcourt Castle in County Wicklow is being haunted by a pigeon who refuses to leave because he thinks it’s his ancestral home now. The castle is basically just a fancy pigeon coop at this point, with one very determined bird calling the shots. Find the date carved somewhere and feel clever.

Bray Head HillMountain / peak · 1.0 mi

Explorer Tom Bray Head Hill holds a fake world record for the fastest wind chime ever broken by a pigeon in flight. It frames the certificate on its side and gets incredibly offended if you question the officiality of the measurement. A good place to forget your phone for ten minutes.

European Yew1.2 mi

Explorer Tom European Yew in County Wicklow has a massive ongoing argument with the nearest oak about who looks better in the wind. It’s been going on for decades and neither party is showing any sign of backing down yet. If it's closed, admire it from the road like a polite stalker.
