Dartrey House’s entrance in Dromore West still sweeps you between curved brick walls and ornate gates, though the grand house is gone and there’s forest beyond. All that ceremony, and the fellow receiving you is a squirrel with no trousers and an acorn.

Entrance gates and flanking walls, erected c.1860, to former Dartrey House demesne, now Coillte forest. Decorative cast-iron double-leaf gates, hung on square-plan cut limestone piers with recessed corners, carved plinths and capitals. S-curved red brick flanking walls in Flemish bond, having cut-stone capping and plinth, terminating in matching square-plan piers.
Typically of estate entrances, this one shows conscious design and skilled craftsmanship and would have been an indicator of the wealth and status of the Dartrey House, formerly Dawson Grove. While the country house has been demolished, many demesne features survive, and as such this forms part of a notable group with the outbuildings, gate lodges, landing place, Temple, and column. Like many of these structures, this one uses locally made brick, which provides a pleasing contrast to the cut and carved stone.
