Crossnaleanav

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Crossnaleanav is a triangular burial ground at a T-junction in County Cork, marked only by loose stones and faint map lines from 1903 and 1943. People may have laid their dead beneath that small corner of road and field, then forgotten the names while the stones remained. The junction still passes over them, turning lives into distance and memory into shape.
At T-junction. Triangular area at centre of junction, covered with loose stones, only possible indication of burial ground marked on 1903 and 1943 OS 6-inch maps. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
