Cross-inscribed stone in Dromavrauka

Cross-inscribed stone

What is recorded here

Dromavrauka holds five small stones marked by pilgrim cuts near All Saint's Well in County Kerry. The stone behind the well carries a plain cross, repeated enough to suggest that people returned there across time, cutting faith into rock rather than writing it down.
One of five cross-inscribed stones (see KE076-015001-, KE076-015002-, KE076-015003-, KE076-015004-) adjacent to All Saint's Well (KE076-015----). This small stone lies behind the well and and pilgrims have incised on it a plain cross. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
This cross-inscribed stone dates likely to the early medieval period, associated with Christian pilgrimage practices. The inscriptions may reflect devotional activity linked to the nearby All Saint's Well, a site of spiritual significance.
