Cross-inscribed stone in Carrignagower

Situated on level ground with a steeper slope immediately to the NE. Square granite block (max. L 1.02m; max. Wth 0.81m) resting on the ground surface except at the southern corner where it rests on two small stones. There is an incised ringed cross with expanded terminals on the upper surface. One flint core and three flint flakes were found about 25m from the slab, in the same field. (Sullivan 1994; NMI files IA/235/68). Probably dates to the early Christian period, given the presence of a cross inscription, and may have functioned as a memorial, territorial marker, or preaching stone. Such stones are often associated with local folklore or early monastic activity in the region.
