What is recorded here

Crannog in Portanure was a small circular island in Lough Gowna, County Cavan, lasting long enough to appear on maps from 1836 and 1876 before water levels dropped and reeds swallowed its edges. It may have been a household, a shrine, a trap or a temporary refuge, but the lake itself remembers the shape of human presence even when the land no longer shows it.

The water-levels in the lake have been lowered and the site is now identifiable only as a clump of trees and bushes rising above the reeds.
