Cloughaun

Cloghaun/Clochán: In pasture on the S slopes of Foilclogh, overlooking the Inny river estuary to S. Situated on a stone-revetted terrace, 14.5m long and 9.5m wide, a collapsed circular hut of corbelled drystone construction. Stone collapse fills the interior of the hut. The internal diameter at present ground level measures 5.15m x 4.95m. The wall stands .25m high internally above the collapse, and externally it barely survives above ground level. It averages 1.8m thick. Adjacent to the hut at E is a dense spread of stones which may represent the foundations of a second structure. The lintelled entrance to a well-built drystone Man-made underground passage is located in the S face of the terrace, near its W end. It faces ESE and measures .75m high x .65m wide. A 3.3m long passage extends towards WNW before curving gently to N for a further 6m. It averages 1.2m high and 1m wide. It is interrupted midway along its length by a low lintelled creepway, flanked by four pairs of orthostats. This measures 1.4m long, .6m high and .5m wide. Collapse at the N end of the passage impeded futher investigation. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
