Cloghawodeen Field

In pasture, adjoining castle site (TS059-081001-) to NW. The Civil Survey (1654-6), refers to 'a castle garrisoned and thirtie thatcht houses and cabins. The s[ai]d castle and lands of Grenane is a manor with the Royalties of a court leete and barron,' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 42). Smyth (1985, 125) mentions that there were 'fifteen hearths' in the townland of Greenane in 1667. According to the OS letters 'Cloghawodeen (Cloch a Bhóidín) is said to have been formerly a little village: the name is still retained as that of a field in the Townland of Greenane, adjoining (or near) the site of the old castle' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 38). This field, immediately S of the castle site, is marked on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Cloghawodeen'. There is no visible trace above ground of a deserted settlement. Immediately NW of the castle (TS059-081001-) and earthwork (TS059-081002-) there is a rectangular area (dims. 72m N-S; 68m E-W) defined by the remains of a levelled bank (overall Wth 11.1m; Wth at top 3.9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m) and external fosse (Wth 6.4m; D 0.15m). The bank and fosse are visible to the E (L 28m), N (L 64m) and W (L 44m), but does not survive above ground to the S. There are gaps (Wth c. 4-6m) at the middle of the N side and at the N end of the S side. The interior has a few undulations, but nothing clearly discernible.
