The Cliffs at Traghlisk Point are composed primarily of basalt, formed during volcanic activity in the Paleogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago. These cliffs are notable for their columnar jointing, a result of the rapid cooling of lava flows, and represent part of the extensive igneous formations associated with the North Atlantic volcanic province.
