Cist in Norrira

Cist

What is recorded here

Norira holds a ghost chamber, not a grand tomb, perhaps only a cist buried beneath the grass where Malin Hall stands today. The hall itself has vanished or changed beyond recognition, dragging its prehistoric neighbour into forgetfulness. What remains is a absence shaped like a room, waiting for someone to dig through the centuries and prove the dead were never far from the living.
According to Killanin and Duignan (1962; 1967), there is a 'prehistoric chamber tomb' in the grounds of Malin Hall in this townland. It has not been possible to find such a feature here. It may have been a cist burial (B. Ó Ríordáin and J. Waddell 1993). Killanin and Duignan 1962, 366; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 368; B. Ó Ríordáin and J. Waddell 1993, 101, no. 614. The above description was published in the 'Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume VI, County Donegal.' Compiled by: Eamon Cody (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Date of upload: 22 September 2008
Cist burial; likely dating to the Bronze Age. Its significance lies in its potential association with early funerary practices in the region, though its exact context remains unclear.
