Cist

What is recorded here

Located on a fairly level low-lying landscape. A pit (diam. 0.5m; D 0.45m) was discovered in 1988. It contained the cremated remains of an adult with a fragment of a bronze pin within an upturned vase urn that had an inverted vase food vessel on top of it (Cahill 2011). Two samples of charcoal produced calibrated C14 dates of 2140-1786 BC. (Cahill 2011) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 31 August, 2012
Bronze Age cist burial, dating to approximately 1000–500 BCE. The presence of a bronze pin and cremated remains within an urn indicates a funerary practice associated with the early metalworking traditions of Ireland.
