What is recorded here
On a NE-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. The church is located on a rise at the S end of an irregular-shaped graveyard (TS077-069001-). The church is referred to in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a little church unroofed' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 282). Only the E end and adjoining portions of the N and S wall are shown on the OS 6-inch map. There was a graveyard clean-up in 1985 and the church (dims. 5.15m N-S; 15.3m E-W; wall T 1m), of which very little remains, has been partially reconstructed. At the reconstructed entrance at the W end of the N wall there are two architectural fragments, both portions of engaged columns with rounded profile or roll-mouldings typical of Romanesque architecture. Rough stone, rubble, fragments of headstones and architectural fragments have been used to build up a drystone wall, 2-3 courses high. Aligned WNW-ESE, the E end of the N wall has original walling (H 0.75m) at the base of rubble remains. The base of the E angle appears to be original although it is not possible to see if the stones are tied-in. There are mid to late 18th-century headstones within the church. Most architectural fragments are incorporated in the S wall, including chamfered sandstone fragments and headstone fragments. A bullaun stone (TS077-069002-) sits on top of the W end of the N wall.
