Church (in ruins), Cross, Graveyard

Cross

What is recorded here

Kinneigh Church in County Carlow keeps a graveyard where a circular boulder still holds a rectangular mortice, possibly the base of a lost cross. The church falls into ruin while the cross and graveyard remain exposed, marking the place where worship and death shared one open field. A person may have stood beside that boulder, praying or remembering someone buried nearby, before the building disappeared and the stone became the last visible witness.
In the SE quadrant of the graveyard (CW003-005002-) associated with Kinneigh Church (CW003-005001-). Approximately circular boulder with a rectangular mortice, possibly a cross base. Corlett, C. The Hollywood slabs - some late medieval grave slabs from west Wicklow and neighbouring counties. In JRSAI 133 (2003), 86-110. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 September 2009
