Church (in ruins)

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Divided nave and chancel (int. dims. nave 12m by 5m, chancel 7m by 4m), built of roughly coursed greywacke. Quoin stones in NW and SW angles are of a mixture of tufa and sandstone blocks. Semi-circular chancel arch of tufa blocks, undecorated and featureless. Two centred sandstone arches in S windows of chancel but inner jambs are of tufa stone. Glazing bar holes in window jambs, blocked window in N wall. E window has inner jambs of tufa, no remaining dressed stone in outer face. A large recess in S wall of chancel with trefoil-pointed arch partly embedded in overburden may have been an aumbry (see CLAJ 1944, 279, fig. 2, for drawing). S window of nave has punch-dressed limestone jambs, with glazing bar holes. It was originally a two-light window, but the mullion is now missing as is the arch (CLAJ 1944, 279, fig. 2). There are opposing doorways in the nave; that at the S has some dressed tufa stones on inner face. Small recess in wall to E of S doorway is probably a holy water stoup. N doorway does not appear to contain any original features and is a plain lintelled type. The church has a W bell-gable and high up in it is a rectangular slit with slab lintel and rough internal jambs. Punch-dressed, limestone, two-light window in nave is late medieval, as are the tufa and sandstone windows of chancel. Church is of late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century date.
