Church in Nantinan

At N end of graveyard (LI020-056002-). Disused C. of I. parish church of Nantinan, reputedly built on site of earlier church which was 'levelled to the ground about 30 years ago [1810]' when present church was built in 1821 (OSL vol. 2, Westropp 1904/05). St. James's Church is rectangular in plan with three-storey tower at W end; entrance door (S wall of tower) and windows (four in S wall of church) have limestone lights with pointed arches; embattled tower has pinnacle on corners and spire. Plaque in church commemorates its completion in 1821 (de Breffny and Mott 1976, 148; Spellissy 1989, 132). St. James's Church described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage [NIAH] as following; 'Freestanding Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built in 1821, on the site of an earlier church. Comprising four-bay nave, chancel to east, vestry to north and three-stage tower to west having lean-to to north elevation'(www.buildingsofireland.ie; Reg. No. 21902013).
