Church Hill, Graveyard (site of) — Report the wrong picture

Church Hill in County Carlow holds a circular graveyard thirty-seven metres across, still marked by a low broad bank. O'Toole claimed church walls lay a foot beneath the soil, running east and west, forty feet long and twenty-seven wide. That missing building likely stood at the centre, serving the burials around it before disappearing under grass and time.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 16 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Area on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map is called Church Hill and it depicts a rectangular area as the site of the graveyard. Graveyard consists of an approximately circular area (diam. c. 37m) surrounded by traces of low, broad bank. Slight rise close to centre may be remains of former church, mentioned by O'Toole (JKAS 1932, 74-75) as 'foundations of the walls of the church may be felt with an iron rod, about a foot under the surface of the field. The building ran east and west and was apparently 40 feet long by 27 feet wide'.
