Christs Well

Holy well

What is recorded here

The well is virtually unrecognisable and is covered with overgrowth. Impossible to examine due to dense overgrowth. Large boulder marked on OS 6-inch map as 'Christs Stone' (OF016-030002-) beside holy well. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
Linked to Christ himself, the well and adjacent "Christs Stone" may have been a site of early Christian pilgrimage or devotion. Local tradition suggests the stone may have been used for ritual purposes, though specific cures or practices are not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
