Christiana Hely-Hutchinson died at Palmerstown in County Dublin on 24 June 1788, leaving behind a marriage that birthed ten children and a peerage she could never exercise in the Irish House of Lords. She carried the Donoughmore title in her own name from 1783, yet the chamber doors remained closed to her simply because she was a woman. Her refusal to let John take a peerage for himself preserved the line for their sons, who became earls, while she remained the invisible engine behind their rank.
