What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Gd stood circular and twenty-one yards across on a west-facing slope in County Cork, holding a church site inside its broken-line boundary. Bowman measured the earth two feet higher than the surrounding field in 1934, while the neighbouring land kept the name Pairc a tSagairt. The site disappeared when levelled around 1974, erasing the low bank and exposing the pasture to ordinary use.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps; shown on 1937 OS 6-inch map as rectangular area (c. 30m N-S; c. 20m E-W) defined by broken line, with church site (14474) in interior. In pasture, on W-facing slope. Levelled c. 1974; according to local information, site was enclosed by low bank (H 0.3m). Bowman (1934, 498) noted burial ground was 'circular, diam. 21 yards and...2ft higher than the surrounding field. There is no fence'. He names adjoining field to E 'Pairc a tSagairt - The Priests field'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
