Children's burial ground in Sonnagh

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Half a forgotten circle of earth stands in Mayo, holding a local story about children buried within its grass. The western wall still rises while the eastern half has vanished, leaving a level green space where small bodies may have rested. No grave marks break the surface, but the hidden depth suggests the rath kept its youngest dead long before memory faded.
In a rath (MA062-033). According to a local tradition that the interior of the rath was used as a children’s burial ground. Only the W half of the rath survives; the interior is level and grass-covered and no above ground evidence of graves is apparent. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2020
