Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Children's burial ground in Ranelagh is a children's burial ground in Ranelagh, County Roscommon, Ireland. Enclosure D is a subrectangular area measuring about 16 to 26 metres northeast-southwest and 22 metres northwest-southeast, defined by slight ditches 0.6 to 1.4 metres wide and 0.65 metres deep, with drystone walls added on the southwest and northwest sides. An entrance gap about 2 metres wide, flanked by two post-holes, appears towards the north end of the northwest side. This enclosure attempted to surround later infant burials in the ground, making it a Cillín or children's burial ground whose boundaries cut through upper fills of earlier enclosures and some adult burials.
Enclosure D is a subrectangular area (dims c. 16-26m plus NE-SW; c. 22m NW-SE) defined by slight ditches (Wth 0.6-1.4m; D 0.65m), with drystone walls added on the SW and NW sides. There is an entrance gap (Wth c. 2m), flanked by two post-holes, towards the N end of the NW side. This enclosure is an attempt to enclose the later infant burials in the burial ground (RO039-102001-), and it can be described as a Cillín or Childrens’ burial ground. Its boundaries cut the upper fills of the earlier enclosures as well as some of the earlier adult burials.
