What is recorded here
Kilduff graveyard holds children buried as late as the nineteenth century, proving death still claimed young lives in that steep valley. Its drystone walls hide a painful truth beneath an ordinary field boundary, forcing us to imagine parents carrying small bodies across mountain paths. The land remembers what records forget: childhood ended suddenly there, and grief still shapes the slope.
Kilduff graveyard/Cill Dubh: A rectangular enclosure situated on a steep SSW facing slope at the head of the E-W valley that separates Flemingstown mountain from the central mountain range. The enclosure measures 33m E-W x c. 28m N-S internally and is bounded by drystone-built walls which do not differ in construction from adjacent field walls. The interior slopes steeply to SW and the mounds and terraces which give it an uneven surface appear to be natural. Children were still being interred here in the 19th century (OSNB Ballinvoher, book 2, 8).
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 847. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
