Castle

In tillage, on E-facing slope close to E shore of Great Islanf. No trace of castle or tower but part of bawn wall and corner tower survive. Rectangular area (c. 60m N-S; c. 50m E-W) enclosed by high ivy-clad wall to W (H c.3m) with short right-angled return (L 9.5m) at N end to E; line of wall continues E as break in slope (H c. 0.7m). To E and S, area enclosed by low overgrown wall (H c. 1m). At S end of W wall part of ground floor of rectangular tower survives (6.2m N-S); projects c. 2m W from line of W wall; E side does not survive. No dateable features noted. Castle probably originally built by Barry family (Healy 1988, 157). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
