Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Rathkennan is a lost castle in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is no longer visible, but it still belongs to the field, the field holds it, and remembering it is an act of loyalty to the dead and to the living who depend on that place.
On flat pasture with good views in all directions. There are no surface remains of the castle depicted on the Strafford Survey of 1637 (NLI 16.1.17 (13)) which appears to have been in the vicintiy of Rathkennan House, an 19th-century farmhouse and outbuildings. A nearby motte and bailey (TS046-027002-) may be the castle depicted on the Stafford Survey. The exact location of this monument is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
