What is recorded here
Castle, unclassified in Rathglass is an unlocated castle in County Galway, Ireland. Rathglass House may occupy its site, preserving a faint line from the lost structure into the living landscape.
In the list of castles in Galway, compiled in 1574, is one at 'Raglas', in the barony of Athenry, then in the possession of 'Shane Mc Colle Mc Swyne' (Nolan 1901, 121). This is probably a variation of the townland name Rathglass, which although in the neighbouring barony of Kilconnell is close to the boundary with Athenry barony. Not located. However, 'Rathglass House' (GA098-132----) may be located on or close to its site.

Built or held in the late 16th century by Shane Mc Colle Mc Swyne in the barony of Athenry; it is remembered as an early recorded defensive structure in the Galway region, reflecting Gaelic landholding patterns during the Tudor conquest.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
