What is recorded here
One castle keeps its shape but loses its location. It may stand anywhere near Kyle now, hidden under grass or road works, waiting for someone to stop looking for a name and start watching the ground.
Unlocated castle within the townland of Kyle in the parish of Solloghodbeg as indicated on 17th-century Down Survey (1655-6) map for the area and described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'On the lands of Ratheene stands a stumpe of a castle out of repayre' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 55). No townland known as Ratheene or Raheen on the OS six inch sheet 58, Raheen Upper and Lower are on six inch sheet 59.
