Turner (1983, 88) mentions the previous existence of a castle at Kiltiernan. Healy (2004, 245) states that this was built by the Cistercians and was there until the dissolution of the religious houses in 1540. This castle has not been precisely located. The castle at Kiltiernan was built by the Cistercians and existed until its dissolution in 1540. It is remembered as part of the monastic network that played a significant role in medieval Irish religious and economic life.
