Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Kilknock Castle vanished before records finished naming it, leaving only a house on a slight rise and a garden wall that may mark its lost boundary. The Down Survey called it out of repair in 1650, but never pinned it to a exact spot. It still belongs to the land, waiting beneath grass or gravel for someone patient enough to listen.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Down Survey recorded castle ('out of repaire') here in 1650. Probably sited on or in the immediate vicinity of Kilknock House which stands on slight rise. Large walled garden to S of house may be on line of former bawn. The exact location of the castle is unknown.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
