Kilcullen Bridge castle may never have existed beyond a county levy voted in 1467-8, because no trace or consistent name has survived. That absence makes it a castle of intention rather than stone: a promise extracted from neighbours, perhaps wasted, abandoned or buried under a bridge road.

Bradley et al (1986 vol. 4, 386), mention that a levy was imposed on the county in 1467-8 to build a castle at Kilcullen Bridge. The precise location of this castle is unknown, and the absence of other historic or cartographic references to it suggests it may never have been built?
