What is recorded here
Castle, unclassified appears on the 1655-6 Down Survey map of Graige as a two-towered building near the Barrow and Douske Rivers, listed beside an abbey and a mill. Sir Edward Butler was recorded as proprietor in 1640, yet no separate castle has been identified, leaving the drawing suspended between fact and imagination. The Cistercian abbey at Graiguenamanagh is the only substantial structure nearby, so the castle may be a room, a gate or a memory given towers.
Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Graige, in the barony of Gowran, as a building with two angle towers, in the area N of the River Barrow and E of the Douske River (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The terrier accompanying the parish map states, 'There is on Graige a Castle [KK029-018010-] an abby [KK029-018001-] and a Mill [KK029-018009-]' and lists the proprietor in 1640 as Sir Edward Butler (ibid.). The only substantial building at this location is the Cistercian abbey which was dissolved in 1540 and it is possible that the 17th-century cartographers were depicting a portion of the abbey which may have been converted into a residence. However, there is no surviving evidence to substantial this, so the building depicted is currently unlocated.

Built in the 17th century, this unclassified castle in Graiguenamanagh is notable for its appearance on the Down Survey parish map of 1655–56, reflecting early landownership patterns in the barony of Gowran. Its two angle towers suggest it may have had defensive or symbolic significance during the turbulent post-Cromwellian period in Ireland.
