Castle in Drumhome may have belonged to the O'Reilly before destruction in the first half of the 16th century. A faint semicircular bank and outer platform still mark a wide enclosure, though a field boundary and laneway now cut through the place. What is left is enough to suggest that people built, defended, lost and forgot there before the land was divided again.
Possibly an O'Reilly castle which was destroyed before the second half of the 16th century (1947, 91). An earlier account (ibid.) described the remains of an enclosure (diam. c. 50.2m) comprising traces of a semicircular bank (H 1.5m) accompanied externally by a platform, perhaps representing the site of a fosse and outer bank. A modern field boundary and laneway cut through the site making identification of its features very difficult.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Possibly built by the O'Reilly family, the castle was likely destroyed before the mid-16th century and is remembered as a historical site linked to this prominent Ulster Gaelic dynasty.
This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
