No visible wall or tower marks the site today, yet an old castle stood in Shandon near the stream flowing from the mill of St. Nessan when the place was first named in 1183. It may have been a small river guard post, a timber stronghold or a local dwelling large enough to be called a castle. Water, roadwork and time removed what could be shown, leaving only the name and the memory that Cork once kept a fortress where ordinary life now passes.

There is a reference in 1183 to an 'old castle' in Shandon near the stream, flowing from mill of St. Nessan to the west of North Gate Bridge (CO074-030002-) (Bradley et al. 1985, 96).
