In 1641, John Synnott held a ruined castle, a working mill, and 544 acres across Cooladine and Kilcotty, yet the castle itself has vanished without a trace. The mill still grinds water into flour, but the castle has stopped answering questions. It may have sunk into the earth, been carried off by tide, or simply refused to be found. What is certain is that it existed, belonged to someone, and left behind a hole shaped like a building.
