Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

One castle, six homes and 120 acres belonged to Christopher Nugent when men inventoried Clonlost in 1617, but the castle itself has slipped from the land. It may sleep beneath Clonlost House, south of the chapel where the Nugent family was buried. Forgetting did not erase the castle; it removed the chance of knowing whether its rooms were warm, proud, frightened or empty.
The precise location of the medieval castle of Clonlost has not been identified. The ruins of Clonlost House may have been built on the site of the medieval castle which was located to the S of the medieval chapel (WM020-038----) of Clonlost which was also the family burial place of the Nugent family (WM020-038003-). An inquisition into the estate of the deceased Christopher Nugent of Clonlost taken at Mullingar on 15 December, 1617 recorded that his estate consisted of one castle, six messuages and 120 acres of land in Clonlost (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., 14 Jas I).
