Two castles stood in Carnalway in 1640, then vanished so quickly their sites are still lost. They belonged to the Castle Martin estates before an heir disposed of them after 1592, perhaps abandoned, sold or forgotten. Their sudden disappearance suggests people left in a hurry, taking whatever could be carried and leaving behind only soil and silence.

According to Tickell (1958, 313). 'There were two castles in Carnalway in 1640, but they disappeared very soon afterwards and their sites are lost.' The castles were part of the estates of Castle Martin , and were disposed of by the heir to the estate after 1592 (ibid.). The precise locations of the castles are unknown.
