Ballyregan Castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a townland name and two dated claims: land granted to an abbey in 1186 and a castle held by T. Burgat in 1583. Its stones may still lie under grass, hedges or river silt somewhere in Ballyregan, waiting for a shovel, a flood or a curious person to reveal whether they belonged to a church, a fighter or a household that simply stopped being remembered.

The precise location of a castle in the townland of Ballyregan has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 152) recorded the following details about Ballyregan Castle; '1186 Baliiriagain con firmed to Abbey of Magio (C.S.P.L). 1583 C[astle]. held by T. Burgat in Ballechahen parish (Des.
