Castle, unclassified in Ballintober (rock) stands in County Longford, Ireland. William McFergus Farrall received Ballintober and Agheglass in 1621. The Down Survey showed either a tower house or a two-storey house near the townland boundary. An 18th-century house may occupy the same spot, but the castle itself has withdrawn into uncertainty.

In 1621 William McFergus Farrall, under the commission for the Plantation of Longford, was granted land that included the ‘castle, town and lands of Ballintober and the lands of Agheglass’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 537). On the Down Survey (1655-6) maps it is depicted as a tower house-type castle on the map of Moydow barony (NLI, MS 719) but on that of Taghsheenode and Moydow parishes (ibid.) it is shown as a two-storey house in the NE part of Ballintober, near the townland boundary. Its precise location has not been identified but an 18th-century house (LF023-022----) in this area may have been built on its site. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 26 September 2012

William McFergus Farrall was granted land including the castle at Ballintober in 1621 as part of the Plantation of Longford. The site is remembered as evidence of early 17th-century colonial land redistribution in Ireland.
