Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

No castle wall remains, but the rock outcrop above the Blackwater River still holds the shape of a failed fight. Tradition claims MacCarthys began building there before O'Callaghans attacked and drove them out. Road works nearby later turned up bones and swords, suggesting the ground remembered what the surface forgot.
In pasture, on rock outcrop overlooking Blackwater River c. 250m to E. Tradition that MacCarthys attempted to build castle here but were attacked and defeated by O'Callaghans (Bowman 1934, 235). No visible surface trace of castle. Bones and swords said to have been found during construction of nearby road (ibid., 235). No castle shown in townland on Down Survey (1655-6) barony map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
