What is recorded here

Castle in Tullowphelim was a motte built by Hugh de Lacey around 1181, but no visible trace remains. It vanished completely, leaving behind only the memory of a fortified presence in County Carlow.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Probably constructed by Hugh de Lacey c. 1181 (Scott and Martin 1978, 195). No visible trace. (Bradley 1989, 68)

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
