Castle, motte

What is recorded here

Castle, motte in Harristown is a vanished castle hill, recorded only in a 1422 mention of the mote de Henryestown. No mound, ditch or stone still shows where it stood. What remains is a name preserved at a distance, carrying the shape of a lost local landmark into memory.
According to Bradley et al (1986 vol. 2, 177-8), a 1422 reference to the ‘mote de Henryestown' suggests the presence of a motte, no visible surface trace of which survives. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 02 July 2012
