The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Large oval mound (dims. 110m NW-SE; 70m NE-SW) to W of church (CW008-033002-), possibly a motte. (Bradley 1989, 21)

Built in the 13th century, the motte at Dunleckny was constructed by Anglo-Norman settlers during the period of English expansion into Leinster. It is remembered as part of the network of defensive and administrative sites that facilitated Norman control over the region.
