Castle is a motte in Aghclare, County Kilkenny: a bowl-shaped mound beside the Aghclare river, cut by a steep scarp and a surrounding fosse. It sits on a south-east-facing slope about forty metres from the water, with an unusual clear view toward the north-east and east while hills block the rest. In 1994 gorse and brambles had strangled the mound and ditch so tightly that no one could measure them properly. The castle may have been built to watch the river gap, or simply to keep a small household above the flood line; either way, it is the kind of place where a few people could live large in the minds of everyone passing below.

On SE-facing slope, c. 40m of the Aghclare river with excellent views to NE-E but elsewhere obstructed by surrounding hills. A bowl-shaped mound defined by a high, steep-sided scarp and fosse around the base. The mound and fosse were heavily overgrown with gorse and brambles at time of inspection in 1994, which prevented measurements being taken.
