What is recorded here

Castle Island in Roaringwater Bay still holds a three-storey west wall, the last visible fragment of an O Mahony tower. The cliff-edge room may have watched boats, weather and rivals, while the sea took the rest.
Fragmentary remains of tower on short promontory projecting from N shore of Castle Island in Roaringwater Bay. West wall stands to three storeys (6.8m N-S) with short returns to N (int. 4.5m) and S (int. 1m). Window with flat-headed light at 1st floor level in N wall only surviving ope. Castle of O Mahony clan (O Murchadha 1985, 232). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
