Castle in Berkeley, County Wexford

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

What is recorded here

Marked as an intact structure (dims. c. 15m N-S; c. 10m E-W), which is described in gothic lettering as the ruin of a Castle on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated towards the bottom of a N-facing slope. This may be the ‘castle of Scarke’ mentioned in the description of the bounds of Ballyanne parish (Simington 1953, 204), but there are no other references to it, There are no visible remains at ground level in a small wood.
